Battle Mountain put on a clinic against Centaurus on Saturday afternoon, shutting out 4A’s pre-season No. 2-ranked squad 2-0 in Edwards.

Carlos Velasquez opened up the scoring with a 20-yard strike off a dish from Jakob Methvin and Fernando Lucero. Methvin put in the second goal after Anthony Sanchez set him up with a nice through ball from just before midfield. Methvin headed the pass into the corner, gathered himself and punched the ball into the top-right corner to seal the deal.

“The boys carried out our game plan extremely well,” stated head coach Dave Cope. “We showed patience, discipline and opportunism. This is a signature win against a very good team.”

The Huskies’ back four of Antonio Escalara, Xavi Vellez, Alex Ortega and Diego Gardea helped goalie Anthony Raudales record the shutout.

Battle Mountain travels to Gypsum to take on Eagle Valley on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Devils are coming off their second-straight 10-0 victory; they put double digits up on Moffat County on Sept. 3 and did the same thing at Sand Creek on Saturday. The Devils (4-1-1) are ranked 16th in the RPI while the Huskies (3-1) sit at 13th.

“Both teams are doing really well,” Cope continued. “It should be a great game.”

Saints football drops season opener to Norwood

The Vail Christian football team lost its season-opener on the road against Norwood 58-18 on Friday. Brycen Rummel threw four touchdowns and Owen Tackett carried the ball nine times for 64 yards and scored three times on the ground to lead the Mavericks.

The Saints drove downfield and scored on their opening possession thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run by Rayman Romanin. Romanin threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Sawyer Willis early in the second quarter to make it 12-12, but Norwood responded with three-straight scores to close out the half with a 22-point lead.

The game was delayed briefly on account of lightning in the third quarter. When play resumed, Didiel Sosa scored the Saints’ other touchdown on a short run.

“I thought the kids played hard with a lot of effort,” head coach Tim Pierson stated. “There’s definitely some things we got to work on (and) improve. Norwood’s a good team with a lot of players back from last season. (They) really out-executed us in a lot of phases. So we got our work cut out, a lot of things to get better at.”

Pierson said he saw “some good things to build on” out of his young team in the opener as well.

“Proud of the kids and proud of the effort they put forth,” he added. Vail Christian will host Lyons next Saturday at 1 p.m.
