The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning drivers to keep an eye out for bikers Saturday, July 12, during the Triple Bypass bike tour.

About 4,000 bicyclists are expected to be traveling on the state’s roadways and bike paths as part of the event, including areas near Interstate 70 from Evergreen to Avon, according to a news release.

U.S. Highway 6 over Loveland Pass will be closed to all motor vehicle traffic on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the release states.

The closure of Loveland Pass will require traffic stops at the I-70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels to allow vehicles hauling hazardous materials to be escorted through, according to transportation officials. Westbound escorts will reportedly occur at the top of the hour while eastbound escorts will occur at half-past each hour.

Westbound Swan Mountain Road in Summit County will be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the race, according to the news release.

Westbound Colorado Highway 103 from Bergen Park to Idaho Springs will also be closed from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., while eastbound Highway 103 will be closed between those areas from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Eastbound and westbound Alvarado Road between Lawson and the Easter Seals Camp will be closed from 6 a.m. to noon.

Although no closures will be in place, drivers should anticipate additional cyclists on the I-70 frontage roads through Vail and along U.S. Highway 6 between Dowd Junction and Avon, the release states.

Drivers should give cyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing, even if that requires crossing the centerline, when it is safe, according to transportation officials. Not providing at least 3 feet of space could result in a ticket, since it is the law, the release states.

Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement will be assisting with traffic control during the race.
